MPL: Creatives Abound

Color in the sunshine

Hello friends, and happy mid-August to everyone! I swear the last time I looked at my calendar, it was the 4th, and I wish I knew where the summer went! With fall fast approaching, we’ve got a couple things to tell you about before we get into the fun that’s going to happen.

September is visible on the horizon, and with it, Labor Day. We at the Millis Public Library will be closed on Monday, September 2nd in honor of the holiday. We will be open our normal hours leading up to it and on Tuesday, September 3rd, so feel free to stop in and grab any last minute books/movies/games/music you might need for the long weekend! And, if you miss us, our e-resources are always at your disposal.

In a similar, but completely different vein, the approach of September means our Adult Summer Reading Bingo is drawing to a close. It’s been our pleasure to see so many of you participating and finding new books, and we hope you’ve been having fun with it! If you’ve completed a row or finished your sheet, please pop in by Tuesday, September 3rd in order to claim your prize or submit your sheet for the grand prize drawing later that week! We’ll be waiting for you~

That being said, we’re not quite ready to let August go quite yet. We’ve got a couple of things coming before the full blast of cooler weather hits, and we’d love to see you for them~

First up is the last meeting of Creative Corner and we still have room for more to attend! Join us on Thursday, August 22nd at 4pm for an art project geared towards children entering 1st-3rd grade.  Registration Required. Younger siblings are welcome, but please register them as well if they’ll be participating in the craft!

Following that, we’ll be having another Color and Chill, this Friday, August 23rd. As usual, it officially starts at 6:30pm, but please feel free to stop by earlier if you have the time! The room will be opening around 4:30, so you can take all the time you like with this month’s coloring sheets. Coloring has been proven to help reduce stress, so take a break from your busy life and enjoy the new pages, soothing music, and snacks waiting for you!

Everything you'll need will be provided— just bring yourself! No registration required.

We also wanted to remind you (no pun intended) that this month’s Memory Cafe is coming up on Monday, August 26th. A memory café is a welcoming place for individuals and families living with memory changes. This month’s café will feature a ukulele player, time for conversation, as well as coffee and refreshments. We’ll also be shifting location this month to the Millis Senior Center in room 18 of the Town Hall (900 Main Street), but we’ll still be starting at 10:30am. As always, no registration is required, but contact Kim at [email protected] or visit millislibrary.org/memorycafe if you’re looking for more information.

Next up, Writer’s Space is back on the schedule! If you’re looking to join a focused group or writers, we’ve got the place for you. Our next get together will be on Tuesday, August 27th at 7pm and whether you want to try and hash out your plot, talk characters, or write/finish your masterpiece, this is the place for you! We just want to see you put pen/pencil/stylus/keyboard to page/paper/screen/program and have some light refreshments. As always, no registration is required. This month’s loose prompt will be “When I…”, and discussion is optional.

Then, once September hits, it’s time to start your engines! Mario Kart for Middle School is back at the library and we're looking for drivers! Choose your racer and get ready drive laps around your opponents. Face the trials of Rainbow road, blue shell the competition, and drift into first! We’ll be hosting this game night on Friday, September 6th at 6:30pm, so brush up on favorite characters and cars to be the first over the finish line.

Recommended for grades 6th-8th. Register here to snag your spot!

Lastly, we’re inviting you to get a head start on this fall’s kids art program. With the start of school, Creative Corner is ending and Make-It Mondays are beginning! Join us for the revival of our weekly craft program for 3rd-6th graders starting on Monday, September 9th at 4pm!  Make-It Monday requires registration so we can have enough supplies on hand.  Please register EACH CHILD separately If you have any questions please feel free to contact Rachel, our children’s librarian.

As always, there’s so much more on our event calendar that we could never list it all. For a full list of upcoming events, check it out!
