MPL: Forthcoming Summer Delights
Anything can be a beach read if you want it to be!
Hello everyone!
Welcome back! Summer is right around the corner, so we hope everyone’s been enjoying the warm weather (or the chill weather— we are Massachusetts) and getting your summer reading list in order.
For our first big announcement, Summer Reading is on the horizon!
We’ll be releasing the Adult Summer Reading Bingo on Monday, June 2nd, so get ready to challenge yourself and read! We’ll have more info coming out then, but mark your calendars and get ready for it!
And we can’t forget our kids!
For students entering K-6th grade, did you know with our Summer Reading challenge you can read your way to prizes at the Millis Public Library this summer? We’ll have reading trackers available at the library or to print from our website to log your reading between June 14th-August 26th, 2025. Each book will count for a certain number of points that you can trade for fabulous prizes from the Summer Reading store (open select hours)!
Learn more here, or Email Rachel if you have questions!
Our Summer Reading program has been generously sponsored by Dan’s Barber Shop.
For our students entering 5th-12th grade, we’re pleased to announce the return of Battle of the Books! This will be a trivia competition with set book lists, and kids can compete in teams of 1-4 people. There’ll be two battles: one for students entering 5th-7th, and one for students entering 8th-12th. Each member of the winning teams will earn a $25 gift card to Park Street Books, PLUS major bragging rights. If you want to check out the potential books, the list will be here.
Battle of the Books has been generously supported this year by an amazing, anonymous sponsor.

Clicquot Book Club is right around the corner, and if you’re looking for a new book club, we welcome you to give it a try! This non-traditional book club generally meets the first Thursday of the month— this time Thursday, June 5th— at 2pm, and you don’t have to read anything before you come! Our presenter will be giving you the run-down of the books she’s gone through during the month, and will also give you dibs on them. Discussions are lively, full of laughter and we serve light refreshments. No registration required, the only thing missing is you.

Just a head’s up if you’ve been reading/have read “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson and want to discuss it: the next meeting of the Horror and Thriller Book Club will be meeting on Monday, June 9th at 6:30pm, and we plan to do just that! No registration required, there are copies of the book at the Library’s front desk if you’re looking for a copy!

We’re also happy to announce that the return of Board Game Night is coming fast! If you enjoyed the last get-together, or you just wanted to go out and try something new, we’d love to have you. No matter your experience, join us on Thursday, June 12th at 6pm to play your favorite games, learn new games, and meet new board game buddies in the community. Or bring one of your favorite games and teach us— we’d love to learn it!
Register here to let us know how many people our featured game this month should be able to accommodate, and if you have any questions, let Kim know!

After getting worked up with friends during Board Game Night, we’d like to invite you back to chill with us— Color and Chill! Join us on Friday, June 13th for a “you” night. We’ll have coloring sheets ready for you, along with art supplies, soothing music, and snacks. As always, the room will be set around 4:30pm if you want to get a head start with your relaxation time, but the snacks and music will start at 6:30pm. Feel free to bring your own supplies or books— the important thing is for you to be able to enjoy yourself.
No registration required.

If you’ve been looking at our calendar, you may have noticed that we have sessions open for our Read to a Therapy Dog program! If your kid wants to practice reading, these pups are the perfect non-judgmental listeners! We have a lot of slots open, starting on Saturday, June 7th and Saturday, June 14th, so check out our event calendar to see which ones will work best for you and register for them! Recommended for children ages 5-10, all ages welcome.

And lastly, while a bit ahead of our usual, we’ve got something for anyone with a sweet tooth. The experts at Cocoa Beantown are coming to present: The Science of Chocolate on Tuesday, June 17th at 7pm! They’ll be here to answer questions like what chemicals in the brain are released when we eat chocolate that makes us feel so good? Does chocolate really have caffeine in it? What is cocoa butter, and why is it so important to chocolate, as well as other products that we don’t even eat? Why do I have trouble melting chocolate chips in the microwave? Why didn’t I like dark chocolate when I was a kid? The commonality between all of these, besides the chocolate, is all of these questions can be answered by SCIENCE! Let’s learn about all of the magical properties of cocoa, including why it can help improve your memory and cardiac function.
Includes Samples! No registration required, but if you’d like email reminders about this delicious program, let us know here!
As always, there’s so much more coming than we have room for in the newsletters we send out, so check out our event calendar to see everything we have coming up!
Until next time, take care!
