MPL: Frankly Fantastic May

Spring into Summer

Welcome back friends! The first bit of May just flew by and we’re getting into the beginning of summer— and all the craziness that goes with it. We hope you enjoyed the relative peace (still ongoing until the 17th) of the AP exams, but we’re here to tell you that’s ending. Now that exams are starting to wrap up, we’ve got a new batch of programs coming your way!

Firstly: We want to thank you all for taking part in this years Millis Reads and joining us for the amazing guests as we explored the language of food together. We’ve got one part of the journey still left and we’d love for you to join us for it!

Join Owners of Tangerini's Spring Street Farm, Linda and Steve Chiarizio, for Flavors of the Farm: Tour and Tasting at Tangerini's—an evening on the Farm to wrap up Millis Reads 2024: The Language of Food.

This event will be taking place on Friday, May 31st at 5pm (rain date on Friday, June 7th), and will begin under the tent with a stationary appetizer. After, the group will board the hay wagons for a tour of the farm, stopping at a number of locations to learn about the crop grown there, how it is grown, and why certain choices are made. Each stop will feature an appetizer focused on the specific crop and there will be time for a short Q&A at each location. The tour will end back at the tent with a stationary mini dessert.

This event has limited capacity and requires a minimum $10 donation to the Friends of the Millis Public Library, which be made by cash or check (dropped off or mailed to the Library) or by PayPal. Please include the name(s) of those registered when you submit your payment. Register here.

Please note that this event is open to adults and high school-aged teens only.

Thank you to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring this program! Please contact Kim at [email protected] or 508-376-8282 with any questions.

Also, just a reminder: Senior projects are starting Monday, May 20th. Pop on down to support the seniors and see what they’ve been working on.

But first up chronologically— we couldn’t wait for exams to finish to have some fun— we have Board Game Night! It is once again time for everyone’s favorite friendly get-together, so pop by on Thursday, May 16th at 6pm ready to pay! It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or an experienced player— bring your favorite game to teach, or enjoy the game of the month! Just register here so we know what kind of game we should feature, and contact Kim at [email protected] or 508-376-8282 with any questions!

Next up is a reminder for our Memory Café: a welcoming place for individuals and families living with memory changes. Each café event will feature a guest artist or performer, time for conversation, as well as coffee and refreshments.

Millis Memory Café will be held on May 20th from 10:30 AM to 12 Noon, but this month only, we will be meeting in Room 18 at the Millis Senior Center. All are welcome and there is no cost to attend.

Contact Kim at [email protected] or visit millislibrary.org/memorycafe for more information.

And then, right after, we’ve got Writer’s space coming back! Join us for the next monthly gathering for a loosely focused group writers on Tuesday, May 21st at 7pm. Share ideas, frustrations, lyrics and triumphs. Laugh, cry, and look cross while you think it out. This month’s prompt to discuss or (not discuss) will be “Walking into...”.

Free write or finish your masterpiece. We don't even care if you doodle nonsense. We just want to see you put pen/pencil/stylus/keyboard to page/paper/screen/program and have some light refreshments. And, if you’d like to receive email reminders, for this month and future months, let us know here!

Next on the agenda, our club for teens by teens: Library Legends is returning for its monthly meeting! This month on Tuesday, May 28th at 2:30pm, we will hold CUPCAKE WARS!  Each person will decorate a cupcake on a theme, and the group will vote on its favorite before deciding the topic for the next month.

Library Legends is for students in 6th-12th grade. This event requires registration.

We’re happy to announce the next session of Latin Dance! Join instructor Jaime Staraitis once again (or for your first time!) for a free salsa dance class at the Library on Wednesday, May 29th at 6pm. This drop in class is free to attend and will be also be held on June 5 and 12 at the same time.

No partner required and no prior experience necessary! No registration required.

We had so much fun with Teen Origami, we’re doing it again! Join us on Friday, May 31st at 6:30pm to practice this ancient art and either make something new or add to your collection. This fun art form of folding paper into shapes and animals is great for beginners and experts alike.

Plenty of colorful origami paper will be provided, recommended for grades 6th-8th. No registration required.

And that’ll about wrap us up for May! We’ve got other things going, but if you’d like to see a full list of upcoming events at the Millis Public Library, please visit our event calendar!
