MPL: Halloween Hits

From your friendly neighborhood library

Hello again! Thank you to everyone who came and helped us out at our book sale this past weekend— both the Friends and everyone who went shopping! We hope you got some amazing books, and enjoyed hanging out with the Friends and Trustees. We appreciate you, and want to thank you for helping to support all the programs we run~!

As for the programs coming up…

We, of course, need to start with a reminder about Board Game Night! Come down this Thursday, October 24th at 6pm to make new friends (or hang out with the ones you’ve already bonded with), play games, and have fun! As always, we’ll have a featured game for the month and you’re welcome to bring your fave to teach! Let us know you’re coming by registering here so we can pick something that everyone can play, or contact Kim at [email protected] if you have any questions~

We’ve also had a hectic few weeks with the sale and early releases, but we’re pleased to let you know that the Friday movies are coming back! Join us for our Friday Features, where we show a new or classic movie in our community room each Friday we can at 1pm~ We’ll provide the snacks, just bring yourself, maybe a friend, and enjoy that sweet movie going experience! No registration necessary.

October 25th: “Five Nights at Freddy's” 2023 (PG-13) 110min

Down on his luck and running out of options, Mike Schmidt agrees to take a job as a night shift security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. However, he quickly realizes that things aren't quite as they seem at Freddy's when the animatronic creatures at the restaurant come alive, hungry for revenge.

November 1st: "Poor Things" R (2023) 141mins

Based on Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel of the same name, the story follows the resurrection of Bella. Through unorthodox experimentations with human life and death, scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter raises the young woman back to life. However, her newer version finds her relearning about the world and its ways. At the same time, she discovers inequalities that restrict women in a conservative society. What follows is her newfound quest to pursue liberation and equality.

November 8th: "Drive" R (2011) 100mins

A lone-wolf Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway wheelman races to save his pretty neighbor and her young son after he incurs the wrath of L.A.'s most-feared criminal kingpin during a botched heist.

And, if you’re still in school— or have kids still in school that want to get in on the movie fun, we’re hosting a Teen Movie Night with the oft requested fan favorite: Hocus Pocus! Join us this Friday, October 25th at 6pm to take part! Bring your blankets, dress up, we’ll provide the snacks as we hit the true countdown to Halloween night!

Three 17th-century witches, hanged for their murderous crimes, are resurrected on Halloween in modern-day Salem by an unsuspecting boy, who must now figure out how to get them back in the ground.

Running time: 95 min

For kids grades 6-8, no registration required!

Speaking of classics… do you have boxes of memorabilia and photos of people from sources unknown? Join us in the RBCR on Saturday, October 26th at 1pm for a special presentation from local teacher turned family historian, Kate Kelly: the Photo Angel. Beginning with a pile of labeled photos of non-relatives that were mixed in with her grandparents’ old family pictures, our presenter had questions. Were they friends? Classmates? War buddies? Neighbors? Determined to find out, Kate reached out to potential relatives of the photographed using genealogy websites and was met with overwhelming success.

The purpose of The Photo Angel Project is to inspire others to dig out their dusty attic boxes and visit antique stores for images with identifiable information to reunite them with their family members. Learn about this fulfilling process and find out some tips from the professional!

Then, once you’ve finished walking down memory lane with your photo albums, we want to remind you about the Millis Memory Cafe (all puns intended)! Join us on Monday, October 28th at 10:30am for this month’s get together, still with all the time to socialize and a group activity to help individuals and families living with memory changes. We’ll have coffee and refreshments as usual. All are welcome and there is no cost to attend!

Contact Kim at [email protected] or visit millislibrary.org/memorycafe for more information.

Also, somehow, we still have a couple spaces in our Tarot for Teens program! If you have a teen (or are a teen!) who wants a glimpse into their future, join us on Tuesday, October 29th at 5:30pm. Get your own individualized 10 minute Tarot reading with our expert, Alessandra Grisa! For kids in grades 6-8, register here to claim one of the limited slots and let her and her cards give you a glimpse into your future!

Speaking of the future and the frights of the season, have we mentioned we have a program made to help you plot that novel you’ve been working on? Join us for Writer’s Space, where you can join a dedicated group of writers and help wrestle back the terror of untied plot lines, missing scenes, and the haze of your story/memoir into a cohesive shape. Whether you just want to work with your own solitude, or you want an opinion, we’ve got you! We’ll have light refreshments ready to bolster you, so join us on Tuesday, October 29th at 7pm to get going again!

Last but not least, we’re hosting a Scrapbooking Night for Middle School! Join us on Friday, November 1st at 6:30pm, bring your photos, tickets stubs, notes, letters, and we'll provide the rest for you to create a binder of memories!

Recommended for grades 6th-8th, register here to claim your supplies!

As always, we have more coming than can fit in this newsletter, so for a full list of programs, check out our event calendar! Otherwise, we hope something’s struck your fancy, and we’ll see you soon!
