MPL: Lunar Spring, February Fling

Hearts and crafts

Hello friends, and welcome to February! We’ve had a pretty chilly winter so far, so we hope you’re staying warm, staying safe, and staying healthy.

First up, the Millis Public library will be closed in honor of Presidents’ day on Monday, February 17th. We’ll be open normal hours leading up to the holiday, and will look forward to seeing you! Stop in to get anything you may need for the long weekend, and check out our e-resources page if you miss us (or want to stay home) to see what you can access anywhere!

Just a heads up as well— the library’s Notary will be out between Wednesday, February 12th and Monday, February 17th. We apologize for any inconvenience and invite you to check out the Notary’s page on our website to see what you need to do before coming in!

It's a little short notice, but our friends at the Pop Up Art School had an opening for us! Join us on Thursday, February 6th at 6pm to dive into the vibrant tradition of hojalata— Mexican tin art. Celebrated for its bold colors and intricate designs, come craft a heart-inspired design perfect for Valentine's Day. Learn techniques for cutting, scoring and shaping thin sheets of metal and finish your unique tin art with bold, bright colors!

For ages Ages 11 and up. Space is limited, so register here to snag your spot in one of the last few spaces!

This Program is generously funded by the Friends of the Millis Public Library.

Are you ready for DIY Suncatchers? We are! Join us this Friday, February 7th at 6:30pm to create a faux-glass suncatcher that works as well as a real one! We'll be using three types of paper— construction paper, tissue paper, and contact paper— to make the magic, and want to see you there.

All supplies will be provided, recommended for grades 6th-8th. Register here to claim your supplies!

Looking to add some extra thrills to your life? To grasp the sensation of someone watching you, unseen?

Join us for our newest Horror and thriller book club and explore the twisted realms of the macabre and the psychological! Find like-minded enthusiasts, and get ready to explore the secrets of the deepest part of the night.

No registration required. Bring friends, suggestions for novels or authors, and get ready for a spooky good time! This month's read is "Influencer" by Adam Cesare, so pick up your copy at the desk and get ready to discuss it with us on Monday, February 10th at 6:30pm! If you can’t make it to this one, our next book will be “Final Girls” by Riley Sager, and the copies have started coming in~

If you’re looking for a different sort of book club, we’re here to welcome you to the Virtual book club! We meet every two weeks to discuss different short stories— switching between classics and contemporary stories, we’ll be looking at everything from literary fiction to horror to fantasy and science fiction, so no matter where your tastes lie, we'll have something for you!

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 18th at 6:30pm, where we’ll be looking at "A Temporary Matter" by Jhumpa Lahiri. If you’d like to join, email Rebecca to get the Zoom link and reminders!

After the holiday, we’ve got some programs scheduled for February break, starting off with Chain Reactions and Creative Contraptions! Playful Engineers will be presenting this hands on, play-based “make and break” event for elementary school children on Tuesday, February 18th at 4:30pm. The program will feature projects like catapults, exploding popsicle sticks, gravity-powered carousels, Rube Goldberg Machines and more. No registration required.

This program is generously sponsored by the Mass Cultural Council.

Then, on Wednesday, February 19th, we’re hosting Bingo for Kids at 10am. Join us to play BINGO for small prizes, yell out your victory, and celebrate with your peers!  Recommended for children ages 5-10, all ages welcome. No registration required.

Last but never least on this letter’s list: on Wednesday, February 19th at 3:15pm join us to make some Perler Bead art! Explore your creativity with this classic 2D craft, finalize your design, and take it home. Recommended for kids ages 5-10, but all ages are welcome! No registration required.

Thanks for seeing us to the end! As always, we have so much that can’t fit in these newsletters, so if you want to see everything we have coming up, check out our event calendar!

Until next time~
