MPL: May it be

MAYbe we'll see you soon!

Hello friends!

We can’t believe May is here and that summer is right around the corner. It feels like April just flew by, but that doesn’t mean we’re slowing down.

First off, we need to let you all know that the Library will once again be hosting AP Exams starting on May 5th. The exams will take place over the course of two weeks, and during that period, we’ll have extremely limited room availability. While exams are going, we ask you to be careful of your volume so the testers can attempt to concentrate. Exams will go until Friday, May 16th.

The following week, starting Monday, May 19th, will be Senior Projects! We invite you to come down during that week to see what our seniors have been working on. We'll let you know what the schedule is when we receive it. Room availability will still be extremely limited during this time, and we apologize for any inconvenience that causes.

Next, with the May settling in, we just wanted to remind you that there’s still time to pick up your tickets for this year’s Millis Reads trip to the deCordova Scultpture Garden! Taking place on Saturday, May 17th, there will be a bus leaving the library at 10am and returning by 4pm. The $20 ticket includes transportation to and from the deCordova Sculpture Park by Silver Fox Coach and admittance to the grounds. There, you’ll be able to tour the grounds on your own or use the guided tour app available for free.  For those with mobility issues, there is one fully accessible path through the grounds. DeCordova is internationally recognized as a major venue for the exhibition and interpretation of modern and contemporary outdoor sculpture with 60 sculptures on display at all times. The Sculpture Park occupies the entire campus: 30 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, forests, fields, gardens, and terraces on a rolling site along the shore of Flint's Pond in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

To view the grounds or learn more about the park, please visit their website. Please bring your own picnic or plan on eating at the Twisted Tree Cafe on the museum grounds. The trip will occur regardless of weather, so be ready for rain or shine! Tickets must be purchased in-person at the Millis Library. We accept cash, check, or payment through paypal at the desk.

We’ve also got some big news from Minuteman: there’s a new library app! If you’ve been using the Minuteman app to have access to your library card on your phone or tablet, look up things on the catalog, place holds, and check your reading history, we ask that you download the new app to keep doing so. It has all the features you love, and greater compatibility with the new catalog that you’ve all gotten used to. The old minuteman app will stop functioning by June 1st, so make sure you make the switch before then!

Find it by searching for “minuteman library app” in your app store of choice.

As for official things you can do at the library (aside from all the usuals of picking books/movies/games/etc., relaxing, and meeting up with friends), we wanted to let you know about something exciting we’ve had in the works! Join us for Henna Night on Tuesday, May 6th between 5-7pm. This program is for both teens and adults, so be sure to sign up if you’d like to have a traditional design drawn on you from our expert guest artist! Register here to claim your spot!

We also want you to know that Color and Chill is still on the schedule in spite of AP exams, and we'd love to have you there! Join us on Friday, May 9th, and get ready to enjoy the "you" time you so richly deserve. Grab a coloring sheet (or bring your own!) and take this opportunity to relax with us.

We'll be in the History Room this time, and the room will be open after 5:30pm to give the test takers a chance to clear out. It should still give you some time if you want to have longer with your coloring - snacks and music will start at 6:30pm.

No registration required.

Come one, come all for the return of Board Game Night! No matter your experience, join us on Thursday, May 15th at 6pm for another chance to play games with people in the community, make new friends, and all around have a ball! We’ll have a new featured game as per usual, so register here to let us know how many players we’ll be hosting! Gaming now is so much more than you’d expect, so come down and see what’s new!

Then, we’d like to invite you to Paint Your own Birdhouse! Taking place on Friday, May 16th at 6:30pm, participants will receive one (1) pre-assembled birdhouse to paint with their own design! Registration is required to claim your supplies, come create the best birdhouse ever!

For grades 6-8.

And lastly, just as a “mark your calendars” sort of thing, the next meeting of the Millis Memory Cafe will be on Monday, May 19th at 10:30am in the Millis Senior Center, located on the lower level of the Town Hall, 900 Main St. Millis, MA. Our guest performer this time will be local Ukulele player, Jane Simpson.  She will play some music for us and talk about her instrument, but never fear; there will still be time for you to connect and chat with the other attendees. As always, there’s no registration necessary, and we’ll look forward to seeing you there! Contact Kim at [email protected] or visit millislibrary.org/memorycafe for more information.

As you know, there’s so much that we can’t fit in these newsletters. If you want to see everything we’ve got going, check out our event calendar!

Until next time, stay safe and hydrated~
