MPL: New Year, Returning Favorites

Recurring programs, Big Events, and More...

Hello friends, and welcome back! We hope you enjoyed your long weekend, and are keeping warm (if not, stop by! We’re a warming station). We at the library have successfully recharged, and are ready to let you know what’s coming up next!

Parents! Teens! It’s once again time for the library to look at it’s future and adjust to make sure we hear what you as our community wants. While we’re thrilled that the adult focus groups have filled, we’re looking to hear from our teens. We’re hosting a Youth Focus Group on Tuesday, February 4th at 4pm. Join other teens and tweens in the community to help envision, craft, and influence the Library’s future (and if you want to count it as a volunteer hour, you can)!

Your input will help us create a five-year Strategic Plan for submission to the Commonwealth’s Board of Library Commissioners. Register to let us know you’re coming here!

As you’ve all heard, A Novel Occasion is coming up this weekend on Saturday, January 25th at 12pm. There’s still time to grab your virtual ticket and claim your place to listen to ten best-selling authors talk about their craft! Pick your favorites and join them in an intimate round-tables, ask questions, and enjoy learning their process and craft from the comfort of your own home. Hear from the other authors, maybe win some prizes, and support the library while doing so! Scroll through the authors here, and join a virtual experience like no other! Because of the late date, your swag boxes will come after, but you’ll still be getting a copy of one of the speaker’s books, assorted goodies, and suggested pairings for your reading time.

This Art Club has a (hilarious) Problem, and we’re inviting you to watch it with us in the first Teen Anime Night of 2025! Join us on Friday, January 24th at 6pm for the first three episodes of the slice-of-life comedy “This Art Club has a Problem”!

An ordinary arts club at an ordinary middle school, Tsukimori Middle School. One member, Uchimaki Subaru, wastes his abundant talent trying to draw his perfect 2D waifu. Another, Usami Mizuki, can't stop thinking about the loser that is Uchimaki-kun. Then there is the club president, who, despite being asleep all the time, seems to care for the two, and another vague, sketchy member, Colette. Today, yet again, in this art club full of mild disappointments, a problem arises.

Recommended for grades 6th-8th, we’ll handle the snacks! Just bring yourself and enjoy. No registration required.

We’re also here to invite you to come spend the morning with us! The next meeting of the Millis Memory Cafe will be on Monday, January 27th at 10:30am. A memory café is a welcoming place for individuals and families living with memory changes. Each café event will feature a guest artist or performer, time for conversation, as well as coffee and refreshments.

All are welcome and there is no cost to attend. Contact Kim [email protected] or visit millislibrary.org/memorycafe for more information.

It’s a new year, and there’s no better time to start moving! To that end, get ready to join instructor Jaime Staraitis for Latin Dance: a series of free salsa classes! This drop in class is free to attend and will be held the following Mondays at 6pm:

  • January 27

  • February 3 & 10

  • March 3 & 10

No partner required and no prior experience or registration necessary— just come as you are!

Let the games begin! Join us next week for the next meeting of Library Legends as they hold a lively Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament for Middle School. Join us after school on Tuesday, January 28th at 2:30pm, prove your mettle, and claim bragging rights from your peers as you shake your way to victory! The winner will receive a $15 Dunkin' Gift Card; no registration required.

Next up is the return of Writers Space! Join us on Tuesday, January 28th at 7pm to join a focused group of authors as we put pen/pencil/stylus/keyboard to page/paper/screen/program and have some light refreshments. Share ideas, frustrations, lyrics and triumphs. Each month we will discuss or (not discuss) a prompt given the month before. This month’s will be “When We…”

Free write or finish your masterpiece, doodle nonsense, or use us to try and work through your block. No registration required!

Last on our docket (for this moment), we’re here to invite you to get in the mood for love! Join us for DIY Suncatchers on Friday, February 7th at 6:30pm to create your own heart-shaped suncatcher. We'll be using three types of paper, construction paper, tissue paper, and contact paper, to create a faux-glass suncatcher that works as well as a real one!

All supplies will be provided, recommended for grades 6th-8th! Register here to secure your spot~

As always, there’s more going on than will fit comfortably in our newsletter, so if you want a full lineup, check our our event calendar and see it all!
