MPL: Seriously Spring

Get your Book Sale On

Hello friends and welcome back! We know we sent you a lot of stuff last week, but Millis Reads is upon us and who better to share everything we have coming with than all of you? That being said, we have a bunch of other (unrelated) things on the horizon, and we don’t want you to miss any of it! So lets get started~

The weather is getting warmer and the Millis Public Library is planning our annual spring cleanup of the Library's gardens. This event will be held on Saturday, March 29th at 9:00 AM and we are looking for volunteers to help! No gardening knowledge is required, just the desire to learn. More information will be provided to those who sign up to volunteer.

Please contact Kim Tolson at [email protected] or 508-376-8282 if you would like to help or with questions.

We know you’ve been looking forward to this so we’re here to tell you— The Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale is coming! Join us the weekend of April 4th-6th to see the curated selection of books, movies, music, puzzles, and games that the Friends have organized for you~

As always, Friday will be the Friends Only sale from 6-8pm. If you’re looking to join the Friends and get that early access while helping out the Library, now’s your chance! If it’s not your thing, the general sale will be on Saturday from 9am-1pm. The final day of the sale will be Sunday from 1-3pm and will be the $5 bag sale! Fill your bag (provided by the Friends) and make out like a proverbial bandit with the steal of a deal. The Friends accept cash, checks, and credit cards, so however you want to stock up on your new stack of reading, they’ve got you.

To prepare for the sale and give the Friends a chance to recover after, we will stop accepting donations between March 28th and April 12th. If you miss the cutoff, save any donations to bring in on April 14th. We’ll happily take them then!

Board game night is almost here! If you’ve been looking for a chance to meet new people and try something new, this is it! Join us on Thursday, March 20th at 6pm to meet new friends and play some games! We’ll have a different featured game to play each month, and welcome gamers of all levels. Feel free to bring in your favorite game to teach as well!

Register here so we get a sense of how many games we will need!

Are you ready for another Teen Anime Night? Get ready to join us for “Yuri on Ice!” as we show the first three episodes on Friday, March 21st at 6pm! Skate into our first sports anime with us, bring your friends and blankets— we've got the snacks! For grades 6-8, no registration required.

Come spend the morning with us!

The next meeting of the Millis Memory Café is coming on Monday, March 24th starting at 10:30am. If you’ve never been, it’s a welcoming place for individuals and families living with memory changes. Each café event will feature a guest artist or performer, time for conversation, as well as coffee and refreshments.

This month we’re hosting Ageless Grace with Maria Skinner. Ageless Grace is a cutting-edge brain health fitness program based on neuroplasticity that activates all 5 functions of the brain and simultaneously addresses all 21 physical skills needed for lifelong optimal fitness for people of all abilities.

There’s no registration required to attend— and if you have any questions contact Kim at [email protected] or visit millislibrary.org/memorycafe.

Then turn on your computers and join us for Behind Their Screens: What Teens Are Facing (And Adults Are Missing)—an online event with Dr. Emily Weinstein and Dr. Carrie James, co-founders of the Center for Digital Thriving at Harvard Graduate School of Education and authors of the impactful book of the same name. Emily and Carrie will join us via Zoom on Tuesday, March 25th at 6:30pm to share surprising insights from their latest research about teens and technology (particularly social media and GenAI), as well as practical strategies for parents, educators, and other caring adults.

Their research has long emphasized young people's voices and diverse experiences, and they consider themselves critical optimists who are actively working toward a future where young people can thrive as they live with ever-changing technologies. This talk is perfect for parents and families of tweens and teens, other caregivers, educators, and anyone else working with youth from 12-18.

This program sponsored by the Morrill Memorial Library and is in collaboration with a multitude of MA libraries. Register here to get the zoom link!

And if you want to get your thoughts on out, join us for this month’s Writer’s Space— a monthly loosely focused gathering of writers. Share ideas, frustrations, lyrics and triumphs. We’ll be meeting on Tuesday, March 25th at 7pm and welcome you to come free write or try to finish your masterpiece. We don't even care if you doodle nonsense. We just want to see you put pen/pencil/stylus/keyboard to page/paper/screen/program and have some light refreshments. Each month we will discuss or (not discuss) a prompt given the month before, and this month’s is “I open the door…”

No registration required— we’ll see you there!

Lastly, just a reminder: If you missed the last Horror and Thriller Book Club but wanted to attend, you’re still welcome! Our next book will be “Lone Women” by Victor LaValle, and the book will be available for pick up behind the desk at the library. We’ll be meeting again on Monday, April 14th at 6:30pm, so if you’re looking for a couple more thrills and chills in your life, we’ll be waiting for you!

As you know, we’ve got more cooking than we can conceivably fit into any one newsletter. If you want to poke ahead on what we’ve got coming, check out our event calendar! Hopefully there’s something here that strikes your fancy, but if not stay safe and well!
