MPL: Summer Sunset
Stepping up to September
Welcome back! It’s good to see everyone again.
Somehow, the summer is winding down, and you’ve all been amazing during it. It’s been so good to see so many of your faces, and to start learning new ones as our library family grows. We’re so excited to show you what’s coming up, so let’s get straight into it~
First things first, with the end of summer and the encroaching season of fall, Labor Day is right around the corner. Taking place on Monday, September 1st, we at the Millis Public library will be closed in honor of the holiday, so stop by before then to pick up any books, movies, or games you might want for the long weekend! And, if you miss us, check out our e-resources page to see what we have available any time!
Also with the coming of fall means that our summer reading is coming to a close. For adults, make sure your have your Bingo sheet turned in by September 2nd to get your line prizes or to submit your completed sheet to be entered into the grand prize bingo drawing!
For the kids summer reading, points collection stops on August 28th, and you can check out the summer reading store hours here or on our event calendar to find out when you can turn them in for prizes!

Just a head’s up, Game night is on! Join us this Thursday, August 21st at 6pm for the return of Board Game Night! This monthly game night is the perfect opportunity to meet new friends, try a new game, and just get out and have fun. No matter your skill level, there’s a place at our table for you. Settle in to try our featured game of the month, or shake things up and bring your own to teach us and get new players! Either way, let us know you’re coming by registering here— there’s a big difference between a game for 4 and a game for 10, after all!

We’d also like to remind you that the next meeting of the Millis Memory Cafe is coming up on Monday, August 25th at 10:30am. Join us for a welcoming place for individuals and families living with memory changes. Each café event will include a featured activity or performer, time for conversation, as well as coffee and refreshments. This month we’ll be playing Bingo together (not the summer reading kind), and all are welcome to attend. No registration required.

We’ve also got another meeting of Writer’s Space coming up on Tuesday, August 26th at 7pm! Join us for the latest meeting where we host a loosely focused gathering of writers. Share ideas, frustrations, lyrics and triumphs. Free write or finish your masterpiece. We don't even care if you doodle nonsense. We just want to see you put pen/pencil/stylus/keyboard to page/paper/screen/program and have some light refreshments. No registration required.

Are your ready for an adventure? Join us for Teen Anime Night as we return to the world of Hunter x Hunter and continue the adventures of Gon and his friends as they search for treasure, mythical beasts, and his father as Hunters!
Bring your friends, blankets, and we'll get the snacks on Friday, August 29th at 6pm! For grades 6-8, no registration required!

We’re also pleased to announce that it’s time to Brawl— Super Smash Brothers style! We welcome kids from grades 6-8 to join us for Super Smash Night for Teens on Friday, September 5th at 6:30pm. Get ready to battle 7 other opponents in this wild and chaotic game of SSB! Face your friends, make new ones, and clear the stages for your victory!
Register here to claim your spot, and may the best fighter win!

It’s once again time to welcome back the therapy dogs! We’d love to invite every kid who’s been self-conscious about their reading to join us. We have sessions open for our Read to a Therapy Dog program starting on Saturday, September 6th and Saturday, September 13th, so check out our event calendar to see the available time slots and register for the one that works for you!! If your kid wants to practice reading, these pups are the perfect non-judgmental listeners!
And if you’re looking for a new book club? We have options.

First off is the return of the Clicquot Book club, our favorite non-traditional book club! Join us for the first Thursday of each month to get the run-down of 10-12 books. From new best sellers to fun, niche finds, our presenter reads them all and then gives spoiler-free summaries to help you pick what interests you. Head home with your choice of the books, and get holds for the ones your hands were too full to claim. The next meeting will be on Thursday, September 4th at 2pm, no registration required.

Our other book club is of course the newest— the Horror and Thriller Book Club! Join us for our next meeting on Monday, September 8th at 6:30pm and get ready to discuss this month’s book, “The Ruins” by Scott Smith. Pick up your copy at the desk, and join a fun and lively group as we explore the chilling, the macabre, and the twists of the human spirit. No registration required~
Two young couples are on a lazy Mexican vacation—sun-drenched days, drunken nights, making friends with fellow tourists. When the brother of one of those friends disappears, they decide to venture into the jungle to look for him. What started out as a fun day-trip slowly spirals into a nightmare when they find an ancient ruins site... and the terrifying presence that lurks there.

And while it’s a little bit out, we’re pleased to announce that we’re teaming up with the Mass. Audubon to bring you Owls of Massachusetts on Tuesday, September 16th! Join us at 6pm for this presentation as we cover owls that live in the Commonwealth seasonally and year-round. Discover their unique natural history, their significance in local habitats, conservation efforts to protect them, and the best times, locations, and methods for identifying owls by sight and sound. And also: this program will feature one live owl!
For ages 16 and up. No registration required, but if you want reminder emails, please sign up here!
This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Millis Public Library.
As always, there’s so much going on that won’t fit into these newsletters. For a full list of programs and happenings, to look ahead, and see how to fill your dockets, check out our event calendar!
